Recent research further reinforces the current scientific evidence that symptoms of epilepsy can be reduced by CBD oil.
The New England Journal of Medicine recently published innovative research focusing on treatment for the Dravet syndrome, a type of Epilepsy affecting children from six months in age with seizures that are often triggered by hot temperatures or fevers. This syndrome has so far been difficult for sufferers to treat and manage. The new research confirms that CBD oil is an effective way of decreasing the symptoms in those affected.
Despite a lack of recognition from government laws and medical industries, both adult sufferers and parents of children with these conditions have been turning towards hemp-based CBD extract like co2 extracted CBD oil for sale on many online stores as an alternative or supplementary treatment to antiepileptic medication for the reduction of seizures with great success worldwide.
This new research is certainly not the first of its kind to reveal the successful benefits of using CBD as a treatment for epilepsy. However, it does provide parents of children who suffer from Dravet syndrome with a greater foundation upon which to defend their decision to use these products. Read on as we try to work out why it has been so difficult for the legitimacy of CBD oil to be recognized by assessing this recent article and a few earlier ones.
CBD Oil Dramatically Decreases Seizures
The study was carried out by the Cannabidiol in Dravet Syndrome Study Group. This group consisted of 9 authors who monitored 120 children and young adult sufferers aged 2-18 years of age in a double-blind trial. These patient’s symptoms were not currently under control by their current antiepileptic treatments. CBD treatment was added to their existing medical routines and the study was approved by ethics committees from each institution.
By initially recording the number of seizures each patient suffered across 4 weeks, they were able to create a point of comparison for each child. After this was established, the children were split into two groups, with half receiving a dose of 20mg per bodyweight of CBD oil every day (know what is the best CBD oil for weight loss), and a control group who received a placebo. The children were also receiving their usual antiepileptic treatment.
For those who were receiving the CBD treatment, it was recorded that their monthly seizures dropped from 12.4 to 5.9 on average, in comparison with a reduction of 0.8 in those who were given a placebo. In addition to this, approximately 43% of patients taking the CBD treatment found that their seizures were reduced by half or more.
5% of patients receiving CBD treatment even reported suffering from no seizures, when this did not occur in those who were given the placebo.
A survey called the Caregiver Global Impression of Change was given to parents and guardians of the patients involved in which scientists found 62% of caregivers believed the overall health of their children had improved since the use of CBD oil had been incorporated into their routine. While only 34% of caregivers reported an increase in overall health in the children in receipt of the placebo treatment.
It is clear from these results that the placebo effect does work to some degree. However, the investigation demonstrates a definite improvement in the health of the children who were given CBD treatment. The study group authors wrote that “cannabidiol treatment significantly decreases the number of seizures in comparison with those placed in the placebo group.”
It is important to recognize that the majority of patients who dropped out of the study early came from the CBD treatment group, and the side effects reported by this group were also higher.
The negative reactions reported in the group that received CBD treatment consisted of diarrhea, vomiting, tiredness, pyrexia, lethargy, upper respiratory tract infection and a decrease in appetite. It was reported that 8 patients from the CBD group did not complete the study due to these side effects, in comparison to only 1 from the placebo group. Adverse effects led to a dose decrease in 10 patients. After a reduction of the dose, these effects totally diminished in 8 patients, partially in 1 and were continued in 1.
Despite negative side effects were rare, there have been some reported adverse symptoms in adult cases in which CBD treatment is used.
Government Ignores Past And Recent Studies
Evidence has been growing for years before this recent study was carried out demonstrating that CBD is successful in treating epilepsy.
An important study was carried out in 1980 researching the benefits of CBD as a medical treatment. Raphael Mechoulam took part in this study and was part of the team who first isolated the active ingredients in cannabis. A pharmacology journal named “Chronic administration of cannabidiol to healthy volunteers and epileptic patients” published information that showed the improvement of health in 15 patients after receiving CBD treatment.
For the progression of CBD to be recognised as a legitimate form of medication for the treatment of epilepsy, it has taken years of activism and promotion from patients using CBD without permission from medical specialists and still there is a long way to go, despite the publication of these promising studies for official progress to be made in the medical industry.
Because of the ambiguity surrounding CBD as a treatment in the medical world, it is unsurprising that doctors are reluctant to prescribe it, despite the successful findings in its effects on health and seizures. There’s is a vast collection of studies which demonstrate the benefits of CBD and yet only a small number of doctors will ascribe to these results.
Despite the progression of the laws surrounding medical cannabis and the limited CBD-only programs in several states, threats have recently been made by the Drug Enforcement Agency condemning CBD oil, and local law enforcement agencies have been complying with this opinion. Despite the 2014 Farm Bill guidelines allowing companies to supply CBD oil, and the safety of CBD consumers so far remaining intact, it is discouraging to witness random raids being carried out on CBD in states such as Texas and Kansas.
America And The Future Of CBD Oil
The DEA is currently being sued by the Hemp Industry Association and other advocates of hemp over its CBD ruling. It is believed by numerous specialists that because so much progress has now been completed towards the legalization of CBD that the time has now passed for this to be ignored, despite the opinion of the federal government.
There is a continual search for ways in which the pharmaceutical companies can benefit from CBD. Despite its proven medical and health benefits and safety of use, supporters of hemp and are worried that the government may continue to suppress the use of CBD and other forms of cannabis.
It could be seen as ironic that although the DEA remains steadfast in ignoring the proof of the medical benefits of cannabis, the U.S. Department of Health holds a patent on the purpose of cannabis and cannabinoids for its antioxidant and neuroprotectant properties.
With all the evidence clearly laid out, it can be concluded that a multitude of scientific studies and abundance of CBD oil customers indicates the safety and effectiveness of CBD as a treatment for a wide range of health concerns. Cbd Oil Adviser wait with anticipation for the government and commercial medicine to recognize the validity of hemp and its healing properties in the near future. As so many patients already know, the benefits of hemp should be widely known and accessible to everybody.
