Fibromyalgia describes a condition through which the patient suffers pain all over the body, often accompanied by fatigue and sleeping problems, problems with concentration and or memory, IBS and migraines or headaches. It appears more commonly in females and has often been linked in its infancy to emotional trauma or stress such as giving birth. Though somewhat mysterious in origin and prevention, it is ever present more and more with known sufferers surpassing a million.

There are a number of ways to treat fibromyalgia, including mental health medication such as antidepressants, or other mental health treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy. It has also been suggested that exercise can help to combat the effects.  However, up for discussion, is the theory of clinical endocannabinoid deficiency, which derives from research into the endocannabinoid system; which is responsible for many functions of the body including fertility.

Yet, fibromyalgia still remains ambiguous. There has been a lot of skepticism around its validity as a diagnosable syndrome, its vague nature, and its durability. It seems to be a cluster of psychological symptoms, even alluding to the pain that isn’t perhaps 100% viable. The cause is also somewhat difficult and vague to pin down. Sufferers of fibromyalgia appear to suffer in various degrees of pain and ability, also making treatment somewhat less attainable.

This is where the new research comes in, also useful with migraines and IBS, in successfully treating symptoms of fibromyalgia.  Work on this topic dates back at least twenty years now, and is still under testing and research stages, with some hypothetical and some plausible results. There are links, according to particular researcher and scientist, Dr. Ethan Russo, between the deficiency and aforementioned conditions such as fibromyalgia and therefore merit and results in using cannabinoid-based treatment, such as cannabis and CBD oil.

The theories rest on the fact that certain functions in the body require certain levels of endocannabinoids, which some people are lacking in. Think of this in the same way that just like some people lack insulin and develop diabetes, some people lack the correct or sufficient endocannabinoids in the body, and therefore suffer because of it and need treatment accordingly.

Scientists and researchers have claimed and continue to claim that mental health conditions such as anxiety disorders and aspects of depression are directly linked to this deficiency, alongside the physical downfalls also.  The Anxiety and Depression Association of America have suggested that the mental health illness associated with the disease derive from the physical pain, discomfort, and fatigue. CBD has been proven to significantly triumph over placebo alternatives in a study dating 2011, in which anxiety patients were administered with a CBD medication and resulted in a noticeable decrease in anxiety.

Therefore Russo is not alone by any means in his theories and hypotheses and it is notably a growing topic for development and consideration amongst typical practices, especially when considering the benefits around and for mental health.

Migraines are well known, well feared and well remembered as a force to be reckoned with. If one has ever been so unfortunate as to suffer from a migraine, the effects are exhausting, debilitating and leave the host a little shell-shocked for the necessary few days recovery. They cause light sensitivity, dizziness, sickness and vomiting, excruciating pain amongst other symptoms.  They are, however, quite commonplace with around 39 million sufferers recorded In America.

Work by previously mentioned Russo has shown a link between his methodology and reduction in migraine suffering.  The main point for noting is that Russo found that anandamide, a key neurotransmitter in the brain and therefore a smaller part of the larger endocannabinoid system, ameliorates the effectiveness of the 5-HT1A receptor while inhibiting the 5-HT2A receptor. This means that CBD could be preventative when used for treating migraines, by working naturally with neurotransmitters. Not only this, but certain cannabinoids display functions of anti-inflammatory and pain-blocking also, important aids in combating the effects of migraines.

Though this line of treatment has not proven any more effective than traditional medicine related to migraines, the side effects of cannabinoid-based treatment appear to be significantly less than other methods.  Therefore it would seem, this medicine method may be preferable as nobody wants to endure more suffering as a result of pre-established pain.

What’s next?

It is predicted that there will be a significant increase in a government-backed study in relation to the effects and correlations of endocannabinoid deficiency and cannabinoid-based treatment for fibromyalgia and migraines. Especially given that the results are proving more and more reliable.

It is certain that there is still a path to be taken and much more research to go before there are conclusive results backed up by enough data. However, of course, this can be said of most studies in their infancy. Scientific theories and results take many years to develop and become recognized as legitimate, trusted solutions. The human body also is always changing and therefore research must be tailored to consider this factor also.  If continued properly, there could be a large number of potential benefits for the population.

There is still a way to go, however, when it comes to investigating the full ECS system and developments, treatments and malfunctions.  There are constant developments in science and medicine with ways humans of a hundred years ago could not have imagined, so who is to say the future does not hold a more holistic approach to preventing and eliminating ailments such as mentioned in this article? There are, like most medicines and research, some points of contention. It has been shown, by Russo amongst others, that an overexposure to certain cannabinoid medicines may have a negative impact, as one would expect from most medicines. It is about proportion in relation to the body’s needs. Much like most things, every person is unique with unique needs. Therefore their treatment considerations must be tailored to this assumption.
