Benefits of Hemp Fabric

Patagonia uses hemp to make all its fabric. The fabric ranges from 100% hemp to blends of hemp and other materials such as spandex, recycled polyester, and organic cotton.

While hemp is known for its medicinal products like CBD oil best for different illnesses like migraines (find out where to buy CBD oil for migraines). Hemp is also good for industrial products like fabric, it has eight times the tensile strength of cotton. It is one of the most durable natural materials in the world with durability that is four times that of cotton. Hemp, therefore, adds durability to the fabric.

The porous nature of hemp fibers enhances their breathability. The material is light and unique. Apparel made from hemp becomes softer with time which brings exceptional comfort to the wearer. Clothes made from hemp are therefore breathable, lightweight and naturally comfortable.

These products are fire-resistant, mold-free and have been proved to be 100 percent biodegradable. Fabrics made from hemp are also popular with their textures similar to linen.

Where does the hemp come from?

Patagonia has engaged reputable supplies in China to source for high-quality hemp. Under the Controlled Substances Act, it is illegal to grow hemp in the United States.  This has made it extremely difficult to grow hemp on an industrial scale in the U.S. Several states have a legal framework for the cultivation of hemp under strict conditions.

Before hemp was declared illegal in the U.S, just like any other hemp product like CBD oil gummies. it was regarded highly in military circles for its use to make canvas and rope used for sails. The use of sailing ships was critical during the campaign against Japan in World War II.

The link between hemp and marijuana sealed its fate when the Controlled Substances Act was passed. The psychoactive ingredient THC, found in both hemp and marijuana was the main culprit. Although THC level in hemp is only 0.3% compared to marijuana’s 5–20%, they were grouped together in the ban.

Patagonia Fully Backs Hemp Legalization

Patagonia has been at the forefront of the campaign to legalize hemp and all its products like cherry bubble gum CBD. In a 12 minute film released in May 2016, the company featured a Kentucky farmer, Michael Lewis advocating industrial hemp as the cornerstone of financial stability for farmers across the United States.  The film, made in collaboration with FiberShed and Growing Warriors, follows Michael’s journey growing hemp on his family farm and later uses its fiber to make an American flag that is flown on the capitol in Washington D.C.

In partnership with the National Hemp Association, Growing Warriors and FiberShed, Patagonia has embarked on a campaign to legalize hemp farming in the US by releasing a video titled “Harvesting Liberty” which seeks to lobby Congress to pass the Industrial Hemp Farming Act by persuading people to sign a hemp petition.
